What is a Staunton chess set?

In 1849 a universal design for chess pieces was created by Howard Staunton, resulting in the familiar figures still in use today. Tournament chess sets will utilize variations of this design.

Serious play or serious style?

For competitive play, look for a Staunton set with properly weighted pieces, in black and white, and with minimal distractions. For display sets or casual play let your imagination run wild.

"Chess problems demand from the composer the same virtues that characterize all worthwhile art: originality, invention, conciseness, harmony, complexity, and splendid insincerity."

Vladimir Nabokov, "Poems and Problems", 1969
